I’M NOT IN LOVE .....OH NO I'M NOT

That's what it should have been. No cleverness,  just a lot of serious material.

10cc's blend of musical invention and lyrical lament brought pop perfection to the mid-70s charts

Graham Gouldman had already written hits including For Your Love and Heart Full of Soul for the Yardbirds, Bus Stop for the Hollies and No Milk Today for Herman's Hermits. His fellow Mancunians Kevin Godley and Lol Creme, joined by Eric Stewart who had played with Gouldman in the Mindbenders, had an international hit with Neanderthal Man under the name Hotlegs, before Gouldman joined and they were signed to Jonathan King's label UK Records and rechristened 10cc. The foursome soon divided into two main writing partnerships that brought commercial success (Gouldman and Stewart) and artistic kudos (Godley and Creme).

The 50s doo-wop parody Donna was the first hit, featuring Creme's falsetto. An attempt to repeat the formula with Johnny Don't Do It was too obvious, but then came the hook-laden No 1 Rubber Bullets. Driven by Gouldman's Rickenbacker bass, it retold Jailhouse Rock with a cast of comic characters.

The masterwork, though, did not arrive until 1975's third album, The Original Soundtrack. I'm Not in Love, written by Stewart and Gouldman, turns the protestation on its head so simply and effectively you wonder why no one had written it before. But even if they had, I doubt they would have come up with the backing, a 256-voice choir built from recordings of the band singing single notes in unison.

On tour, they needed backing tapes to capture the dreamy magic, but no one minded. And even the mirrorball lighting when I saw them at the De Montfort hall in Leicester seemed somehow right.

There was another album before the original lineup split. How Dare You spawned two hits – Art for Art's Sake and I'm Mandy, Fly Me – but Godley and Creme wanted to move on. Gouldman and Stewart carried on until 1983 and there were more hits, but the magic years were those of the first three albums. The fractured relationships meant attempts at reunions in 1991 (with all four original members) and 1995 (with Gouldman and Stewart) were not successful.

Which seems a flat end to the story. Except that the music lives on. I'm Not in Love has become one of the most covered serious pop songs of all time, and no doubt the original soundtrack to many a love story.

10cc - I'm Mandy, Fly Me- serious cut - The Woman Hunter Version with end credits

This song should have been recorded seriously without too much wordplay in the key of D major. I like The Woman Hunter Version of this song where I did the serious cut which I got rid of the bad intro that was recorded in the wrong key.

10cc - Feel the Love - Schuyler & Charlotte Whitney Version

This could have been the right video of Sky & Raven Whitney, whose real names are Schuyler & Charlotte Whitney from the soap opera, "The Edge of Night", not the original messy video

Years after leaving 10cc and becoming successful music video directors, Godley and Creme directed the video for 1983's "Feel the Love", a single from Windows in the Jungle.

Godley & Creme - A Little Piece of Heaven - Wedding Cake Version

This is what could have existed - the wedding cake music video, not the messed-up original video.

As Xylon from amazon.com once reviewed:

I found this little disc in a used record shop some years ago and being the 10cc fan that I am (and having the vinyl), I snatched up that little plastic shiny disc with a hole!

I have played the recording a few times and none over the last few years, yet it remains in the collection for one simple reason... I doubt I would ever find this one again.
As I recall this recording is a homage to harmonica-played blues. It's still got your Godley-Creme lyrical humor and harmony, but it was largely a forgettable listen.
I'll give it another listen this evening and update this review.

CRY – GODLEY AND CREME

good video as The Battered Version

bad morphing video that is not watching with too many changing faces spoiling up the beauty

Godley & Creme was a duo of English pop musicians and music video directors, Kevin Godley and Lol Creme.

The pair began releasing albums as a duo after splitting from pop band 10cc.

People in Love - 10cc

The third single from the album Deceptive Bends (1977). However, People In Love is less well received than its predecessors (The Things We Do For Love).

"People in Love" - Who did it better? Joyce Berry vs. 10cc

Joyce's sultry and smoky alto version of the 10cc tune from 1982 with soft drumming and soft, soulful percussion matching her soft and soulful voice.

10cc's original with edgy, hard drumming of Paul Burgess from 1977 not matching Eric's soft tenor.

Which version is better?

10cc - I'm Not in Love (Full BBC Music Documentary)

Godley & Creme

Kevin Godley and Lol Creme first recorded together as a song writing duo in the 50's, but later teamed up to form 10cc along with Stewart and Gouldman. when 10cc split up in '76, Godley and Creme continued recording together as a duo throughout the '80s.

Godley and Creme: Cry 1985

This Godley and Creme (from 10cc – they were a successful MOR band) video from 1985, Cry uses continuous film lap-dissolves with carefully registered eyes, to create an effect that was to become a digital motif called ‘Morphing’ from the early 1990s. Video effects just before the digital revolution of MPEG and MPEG2 in the 1990s used analogue techniques – in-camera effects, post production overprints and lap-dissolves – now wholly replaced by digital post.

Nominated for Video of the Year at 1986 MTV VMA's - an early classic, and groundbreaking video.

Brilliant, probably one of the most important music videos, done without computers years before morphing. A display of technical genius.

10cc: “It Doesn’t Matter At All” (1980)

it doesn't matter at all record sleeveKronomyth 9.1: INCONSEQUENCES. This soft, fluffy ballad was floated as the first single from Look Hear?and promptly disappeared from the airwaves. It’s not an awful song, in the same vein as “People In Love” and “For You And I,” both of which were a blanching of something that used to be so colorful. As I’ve mentioned elsewhere, 1980 was a turning point where bands were either looking ahead or looking back. “It Doesn’t Matter At All” is guilty of being nostalgic at a time when 10cc could (should?) have embraced new wave like Alice Cooper (Flush The Fashion) and Paul McCartney (McCartney II). There’s also a video of the band lip-synching to this in which you can clearly make out Eric Stewart’s Dracula teeth, proving that all pop music is made by undead vampires who keep recycling the same melodies every hundred years (and harvest the organs of drummers, but that’s another story).

Original 7-inch single version
A1. It Doesn’t Matter At All (Eric Stewart/Graham Gouldman) (3:59)
B1. From Rochdale To Ocho Rois (Graham Gouldman)

The Plastic
Released on 7-inch single in 1980 in the UK (Mercury, LOOK 2) and Germany and the Netherlands (6059 279) with picture sleeve. Also released as promotional 7-inch single in 1980 in the US (Warner Bros., WBS49266) feat. A stereo and mono.

10cc: “People In Love” (1977)

people in love record sleeveI’ve always heard this as a pale successor to “The Things We Do For Love.” THAT song was a roller-coaster ride; this is more of a swan ride. Still it’s a lovely track, fit if not for a king than at least one PM I know. Like most of their singles, the B side is a nonalbum track, promisingly titled “Don’t Squeeze Me Like Toothpaste.” It’s not as silly as it sounds, but a country-pop song with some sweet guitar playing and a good melody. Toothpaste or not, the band lost most of their teeth when Godley and Creme dropped out, as these two tracks confirm.

Original 7-inch single version (UK)
A1. People In Love (Eric Stewart/Graham Gouldman)
B1. I’m So Laid Back I’m Laid Out (Eric Stewart/Graham Gouldman)

Original 7-inch single version (US/Japan)
A1. People In Love (Eric Stewart/Graham Gouldman) (3:42)
B1. Don’t Squeeze Me Like Toothpaste (Eric Stewart/Graham Gouldman) (3:44)

The Plastic
Released on 7-inch single in May 1977 in the UK (Mercury, 6008 028), the US (Mercury, 73917) and Japan (Mercury, SFL-2181); reached #40 on the US charts (charted on May 21, 1977 for 7 weeks). Regional versions feature picture sleeve. Also released as promotional 7-inch single in 1977 in the US (Mercury, DJ-496) feat. A only.

Godley & Creme - Cry

Cry - Godley And Creme
Although not a musically or lyrically complex song, "Cry" is intensely beautiful, and expressive, and will always remain one of my favorites.  The video was groundbreaking at the time, and if you can get past the creepiness factor of it, it's quite stunning, and some of the facial expressions are amazing...as an artist, I truly appreciate that.

Godley & Creme were an English rock duo composed of Kevin Godley and Lol Creme. The pair began releasing albums as a duo after splitting from the pop band 10cc. In 1979 they directed their first music video for their own single "An Englishman in New York". After this, they became involved in directing videos for such artists as UltravoxThe PoliceDuran DuranFrankie Goes To Hollywood and Wang Chung, as well as directing the ground-breaking promo for their own "Cry" in 1985. The duo split at the end of the 1980s and have both been involved in music videos, TV commercials, and sporadic music projects since.

10cc ~ I'm Not in Love - Julie-not-in-love-with-Nick version- fan music video

the story is told that "Eric Stewart" did first a more or less "Bossa Nova" version of the track. The other members "godly & creme" didn't like the track at all and so the track was put beside. But as the people from the studio where whisteling the tune "Stewart" was able to convince his band partners and they went to the studio to do another, more down tempo version of it.

another side story is, that "stewart" told in an interview that the band was really struggling financial wise and as they had already a deal with a small company their position was more or less tragic. The production of "I'm not in Love" changed... of course ... everything. world wide monster hit.

10cc - Woman in Love (1992)

I am not too familiar with this song, 'cause this song is not the best.

10cc - Feel the Love (1983)

Worst song: "Neanderthal Man" - Hotlegs

I never like this song, "Neanderthal Man" by Hotlegs, because it's filled with too much lust; that's why it destroyed all the wholesomeness of The Carpenters.

10cc Run Away - original promo video from 1982

Probably the loveliest 10cc never to appear on a British 10cc album. "Runaway" was the 10th track on the US release of 10cc's "Ten Out Of 10" but only came out as a single in the UK. Enjoy.

10cc -I'm not in Love - Honest Jack Tripper Version

short version is better without Kathy Redfern's midsection

Too bad that the song on a 7" 45 RPM single had Kathy Redfern's annoying be-quiet-big-boys-don't-cry junk ruining in midsong that 10cc's record label, Mercury had no time to omit, plus it's too bad that the repeated first verse was omitted too abruptly. I will call that song very heartfelt and bittersweet that touches my heart, because it's mainly all about marriage relationship falling out of favor. Besides it's very touching.

I made a comment about that song on YouTube and said:

It's too bad that in 1975 British band 10cc might have taken a break from having a wacky sense of humor and started concentrating on a serious relevant version of the bittersweet heartbreaking ballad, "I'm Not In Love", minus Kathy Redfern's self-parody and believe me it is 10 times better than the epic 6-minute version of that song with her part added.

Godley & Creme - A Little Piece of Heaven - Wedding Cake Version

A lovely tune and a great use of lots of different harmonicas can’t escape the feeling that Godley-Creme should be delivering something a little bit deeper than this piece of fluff, especially on an album about the end of the world.

That's the second track after "H.E.A.V.E.N.", taken from their seventh and last album, "Goodbye Blue Sky".

Godley & Creme - A Little Piece of Heaven - Wogan Version

 aired in the UK

Taken from their last album, "Goodbye Blue Sky"

Here is the story behind their last album:
Goodbye Blue Sky is the seventh and final studio album by Godley & Creme. Released in 1988, the album generated two singles, "Little Piece of Heaven" and "10,000 Angels" as well as videos for those two singles.
The album featured backup vocals by three future members of 1990s dance band Londonbeat.
Making of
The album is notable through its use of harmonicas, which are used substantially on most tracks.
In a 1988 interview with Pulse! magazine, they said:
“ We also decided to use other musicians on the album for the first time ever, to get back to a real live band feel, and that's when we started auditioning harp players," adds Godley. "And to our surprise, we found that there's a huge range - everything from bass to treble - but that traditionally harmonicas are always played as solo instruments. They're never played in groups."
"So naturally we thought, 'Why not use a harmonica section?"' Creme continues. "And after auditioning a bunch of players, none of whom had ever played with another harp player, we finally selected two guys - Mark Felton (sic) and Mitt Gamon -and began laying down rhythm tracks at my home studio.
"Next, we brought in three black backup singers - George Chandler, Jimmy Helms and Jimmy Chambers - whom we'd met on the Paul Young video, and started building up the tracks. The interesting thing is that the more we got into the sounds, the more we began re-writing the songs to suit the singers or the harp players.

Song of the day: Godley & Creme- A Little Piece of Heaven

This song features Jimmy Helms, Jimmy Chambers and George Chandler providing the male-group backup vocals behind that British pop/rock duo. I wonder whatever happened to those 3 black guys from both America and Trinidad who did the male backup vocals behind Kevin and Lol.

In 1988, Godley & Creme released "A Little Piece of Heaven". It was a single from their album Goodbye Blue Sky, and was mostly a hit in the Netherlands and Belgium, where it peaked at number 4. Godley & Creme originally were members of 10CC, but decided to quit the band and move on together. The song was famous for its music video, and both have been directing music videos more than scoring hits. They directed videos for Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Duran Duran and many others. Enjoy.

Story of a Song: 10cc's "I'm Not In Love"

Do you remember this song you say? Oh yes you do! 10cc’s “I’m Not In Love” is one of rock’s greatest love songs. Work on the song began in late 1974 and was finished in 1975 so that it could be included in the band’s ground-breaking album, The Original Soundtrack. Godley & Creme - "Cry" - the coolest video from the 80s

 Hey Gang,

Big Q here with a video hit bonus.  How many remember the song "Cry" from Godley & Creme?

Godly & Creme are Kevin Godley and Lol Creme.  They directed video's for such acts as the Police, Wang Chung, and Duran Duran.

They were original members of the band 10cc.  They were considered the experimental half of the group, which can definitely be seen in their one U.S. hit "Cry".  The video used a technique called analogue cross fading.  At the time is was the most unique video on MTV.

Battered version of this song could have existed in 1985, not the original messed-up morphing video.
