10cc- Run Away -American Version with Luke & Laura from "General Hospital"

The only 10cc release in 1982 was the sweet single [110] ‘Run Away’, an Eric Stewart ballad that could have easily slotted on as part of either ‘Ten Out Of Ten’ or ‘Windows In The Jungle’. Eric is still kicking himself for letting someone important walk out of his life and it all feels so unreal, as if he’s in a ‘dream’. The kinder, softer companion song to ‘Don’t Ask’ from the previous album, it’s at one with Eric’s other songs about only now realising how precious a loved one is to him. The song is sweet, with a typically golden Eric vocal mixing love with humility and there’s a nice return to the ‘I’m Not I Love’ choir of ‘ahhhh’s in the background vocals. There are some nice lyrics too, Eric apologizing for being ‘backward ain coming forward’ and again admitting that, ‘SSSSilly Love’ and ‘I’m Not In Love’ style, that cliches ‘won’t cut it’ compared to the depth of his feelings. This song needs a little something else to make it truly stand out though – a middle eight or a solo or something. Find it on: ‘Tenology’ (2012) and the CD re-issue of ‘Ten Out Of Ten’

Why 10cc's "I'm Not in Love" should have been a serious heartbreaking ballad instead of an anti-love song or a cliche

1. 10cc would have taken a break from having a wacky sense of humor and started concentrating on that serious ballad, entitled, "I'm Not in Love".
2. It should have had more serious meaning.
3. The clever lyrics would have been converted into heartbreaking, argumentative lyrics.
4. It should have had a clearer topic, called, the end of love and romance.
5. Kathy Redfern's evil nonsensical middle spoken part should have been deleted.
6. The negative line "be quiet" should have not been said in midsong.
7. The false line, "big boys don't cry" should have not been repeated too often to make this song go off.

I made a comment on YouTube and said:
Kathy Redfern's middle part made no sense. Her middle part that made that song too long and too lengthy without cutting it short to make it more concise would have been deleted. It would have been left out. You cannot tell anybody to be quiet to ruin the song in the middle like that because it's very negative to me. You cannot assume that all big boys don't cry because it's a lie. Furthermore you cannot repeat Kathy's last line, "Big boys don't cry" to make that song go off just to cause that song to stall for no reason. No, you can't. You can't do that just to leave it in a mess like that.

 We are often asked “How did it happen?” but rarely “Why did you let it happen?” We have easy answers for how a relationship fails: ‘they gave up,’ or ‘they didn’t want me any more,‘ and the tried and true ‘it was her/ him, not me.’ The problem is when it comes to ‘why’ because then we don’t always speak plainly. We are either brutally honest (truth!) or radically sarcastic (No – I hate my one and only). Sarcasm says a lot about who we really are inside, doesn’t it? Psychologists say that when we tease in this way, we reveal what is truly fascinating us.

For the long experienced British rock band 10cc a change in their future was because of the band’s name. It had been changed previously more than seven times with some varied recording success in the UK and the US as the band morphed from rock and roll to pop to bubblegum dance music. Their Strawberry Studios production facility was making hits for Top 40 artists such as Silver Fleet, Freddie and the Dreamers, Ohio Express and Neil Sedaka.

But, it was when they signed on with Jonathan King, an English singer-songwriter, record producer and music entrepreneur, that they admitted how they felt about themselves as rock and roll songwriters and musicians. Eric Stewart, Graham Gouldman, Kevin Godley, and Lol Crème used the “male sex drive” moniker to lead them to five Top 10 singles and a #1 hit all from their first five releases.

On their way to success in America the quirky “Life is a Minestrone” was the first single from their third studio album, “The Original Soundtrack.” For some this parody was too Frank Zappa-esque and a confusing surprise.  It seems their sharp wit put off quite a few music lovers, despite reaching #7 in the UK. That is the slippery part about sarcasm, it sometimes makes people laugh when we are expressing how sad we really are about something.

The biggest hit and the most emotionally impactful from “The Original Soundtrack” was “I’m not in Love” which was written by Eric as a comeback line to his wife. Apparently, he had a bad habit of not saying “I love you” often enough. So, as the lyrics linger in what appears to sound like an argument between lovers is really a one-upsmanship of sarcastic retorts. When looked at in this light, as playful banter, the song is quite amusing.  Unfortunately, for most of us, the song’s theme carries a deeper meaning and sounds more like a declaration that a heart is broken and feelings hurt.

The release included futuristic looped vocals propelling it to #1 in Canada, Ireland, and the UK, and #2 on the US Billboard Hot 100. But, it was studio secretary Kathy Redfern who made the song a sensation. Her whispering the lines: “Be quiet. Big boys don’t cry” was the female riposte to “I’m not in love (with you).” Even this was meant to be sarcastic. We need to remember that sarcasm is dangerous. At times when it is meant to be good natured it can be humorous.  However, not being truthful about how we feel about the person we love can cause hurt feelings – and those feelings might be our own.

10cc's 1975 number one single 'I'm Not in Love' is one of the greatest ballads ever made, and is a solid gold Smooth favorite.

But how was it made? And what was the song about? Who whispered the famous 'big boys don't cry' line? Here's the official story behind the song:

I had this crazy idea in my mind that repeating those words would somehow degrade the meaning, so I told her, 'Well, if I say every day "I love you, darling, I love you, blah, blah, blah", it's not gonna mean anything eventually'.

The masterwork, though, did not arrive until 1975's third album, The Original Soundtrack. I'm Not in Love, written by Stewart and Gouldman, turns the protestation on its head so simply and effectively you wonder why no one had written it before. But even if they had, I doubt they would have come up with the backing, a 256-voice choir built from recordings of the band singing single notes in unison.

On tour, they needed backing tapes to capture the dreamy magic, but no one minded. And even the mirrorball lighting when I saw them at the De Montfort hall in Leicester seemed somehow right.

There was another album before the original lineup split. How Dare You spawned two hits – Art for Art's Sake and I'm Mandy, Fly Me – but Godley and Creme wanted to move on. Gouldman and Stewart carried on until 1983 and there were more hits, but the magic years were those of the first three albums. The fractured relationships meant attempts at reunions in 1991 (with all four original members) and 1995 (with Gouldman and Stewart) were not successful.

Which seems a flat end to the story. Except that the music lives on. I'm Not in Love has become one of the most covered pop songs of all time, and no doubt the original soundtrack to many a love story.
